March 8th: International Women’s Day

In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8th as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace. The theme colour for today’s International Women’s Day is purple. The theme for this year’s day is: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”

Celebrate the great contribution women have made in your life! And if you are a woman, thank you for everything you do! May you live a life of peace, free of harassment and of violence, appreciated by all around you…

For more on what you can do to stop women from being harassed, log onto our French sister publication’s website, refletdesociete.com, and watch our recent round table (Table Ronde) on how to fight the street harassment of women, held on February 26th, including panelists Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Federal Member of Parliament for Hochelaga; Mélusine Dumerchat, doctoral student in sociology at UQAM; and Audrey Simard, community organizer. The Round Table was chaired by Reflet de Société journalist Arianna Noera.
