A Candle – Poetry

A poem from the book Liberté – Un sourire intérieur (Freedom – an Inner Smile)

An anthology of poems to meditate upon. Each poem reveals a message, an emotion. The same poem can take on a different color, depending on your state of mind.

A Candle

The candle’s flame

Waltzes and trembles

Bending to my attacks

Along the contours of this wax in fusion.

I shape it

I play with it

It takes shape

Then it disappears

Under the intensity of the flame.

I play with the candle,

Its base is so solid

Whereas its top is so vulnerable.

In an act of kindness

I can take the sensitive part

Away from the heat source

To harden its character.

In an act of malice

I can take the solid part

And plunge it into the flame

To soften its appearance.

I don’t have to be good or wicked.

I don’t have to justify my action.

I have a decision to make

And I will have to take responsibility for the consequences.
