The Montreal Royals and the Brooklyn Dodgers

Black History Month

By Raymond Viger

In February of 2016, the government of Canada will officially celebrate Black History Month for the 20th time.

One name that comes up regularly when we present black people who have made history is Jackie Robinson. On April 15th, 1947, Robinson became the first black person to play baseball in the major leagues.

Even though Robinson was an American who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, he spent a year in Montreal. He lived on 8232 de Gaspé in Montreal while playing for the Montreal Royals, which was the Dodgers’ minor league farm team.
